Abstract

The study aimed to find out the levels of students‟ motivation in learning English at Sungai Deras English course and Training Center and which dominant types of motivation. This study used a descriptive design, a quantitative research technique. All English Course and Training Center students made up the study's population, and
the sample for the study was drawn using a purposive sampling technique based on the population's age and grade. In the end, the samples selected were Elementary A and B classes, with a total sample size of 34 students who were 11-12 years old and were in grades 5 and 6 at the school. In collecting data, a questionnaire was adapted from Gardner (1985) and Takahashi (2018). As a result, data on students' motivation level and dominant motivation types were gathered using the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics that were assessed using SPSS 23.00 were used by the researcher to analyze the data that were gathered. Based on the results of the frequency percentage of the sample, students are 80.15% motivated to learn English, which was rated as high by 67.6% of students‟ frequency. Then, with a percentage of 83.8% in dominant kinds for students' motivation, the types that encourage students to learn English are deduced from the intrinsic type.
