Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine students' perceptions of reading strategies. This research is a descriptive research. To find out students' perceptions of reading strategies the data were analyzed using a Likert scale and using a questionnaire. The population of this study were all students in the third semester of the English language education study program IKIP PGRI Pontianak with a total of 133 students and a focus sample of 45 respondents who returned the questionnaire. This research is a survey with adapted the questionnaire from Shoerey and Mokhtary (2002). The questionnaire consists of 25 questions with 4
alternative answers. The findings of this study reveal that students' perceptions are high users of the three reading strategies, namely global reading strategies (GLOB), problem solving strategies (PROB), and support strategies (SUPP). The results of the data analysis showed that students' perceptions of reading strategies gave a positive response. The results of this study indicate that the overall results
of the three reading strategies, global reading strategies and problem solving strategies get the highest average. Global reading strategies and problem-solving reading strategies get results with an mean of 3.13 while supporters of reading strategies get an mean result of 3.12. This study found that students' perceptions were more dominant using global reading strategies and problem solving reading
strategies.
