Abstract

This research aimed to identify the factors that caused speaking anxiety and to determine the level of student anxiety. This is done because many students do not know the cause of anxiety and how high the level of student anxiety is. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method to
explore and explain data about students' anxiety. This study involved 6 students for interviews and 10 students for the questionnaire from the 2017 academic year from IKIP PGRI Pontianak. In collecting data, the researcher also used Horwitz's (1991) questionnaire and interview instruments. From the interviews, the researcher found six factors that caused students' anxiety: fear of failure, emotional conflict, speaking anxiety, fear of losing material, and the condition of the presentation room. Meanwhile, from the results of the questionnaire, the category of student anxiety was determined into three categories from low, moderate, to high levels of anxiety. After that, 10 students were given a questionnaire to determine their level of anxiety. The results showed that there were no students with low anxiety levels, 8 students with moderate anxiety, and 2
students with high anxiety levels.
