Abstract
This research aimed to explore the current trend of online dictionary use strategies of English Education Study Program Students of IKIP PGRI Pontianak in the academic year of 2018/2019 and to discover the impacts that students obtained. The research implemented a descriptive survey research design in quantitative and qualitative method. The research conducted in cross-sectional survey which carried on in short-term investigation. There were 55 ninth-semester students participated to collect primary data.
The proposed research applied direct and indirect communication techniques where utilized such tools as online questionnaire (open-ended and close- ended), observation and interview. The close-ended questionnaire was modified instruments based on Strategy Inventory of Electronic Dictionary Use (SIEDU) by Gavriilidou and Mavrommatidou (2016) which consisted of 37 statements rated five Likert-scale. Observation and interview were referred to Cresswell’s protocol suggestion (2012). In addition, the interview items were consulted from Takahashi (2012).
The research findings indicated that overall students’ strategies of online dictionary use were averaged at usually scale, with dictionary selection strategy being the best rank, followed by dictionary use awareness skill, look up strategies in the new electronic environment, strategy for lemmatization and acquaintance with dictionary convention, and navigation skills. Specifically, the strategy of knowing what an online dictionary in a mobile phone and tablet is ranked top among overall strategies. In further analysis regarding impacts, the findings found that online dictionary use strategies influenced mostly in text production, followed by accessibility usage, translation and operational cost.
