Abstract
Improving Students’ Speaking Skill through Role Play
to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 Sepauk, Sintang Regency in
Academic Year of 2015/2016. The research was conducted in order to investigated how the
improvement of students’ speaking skill after being taught through the
implementation of role play technique to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri
2 Sepauk in academic year of 2015/2016.
The form of this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The
Classroom Action Research that was used in this research adopting the Kemmis
and Mc. Taggart’s design. The subject of this research is 28 students of VIII C
class. Techniques of data collecting used were observation technique and
measurement technique. Field note, observation checklist, and speaking test were
used as the tools to collect the data.
Based on the result of research findings, shown that Role Play technique
can improve the students’ speaking skill. Role play was successfully solved the
students’ problem in speaking skill. It was proven from the improvement of
students’ behavior and students’ score. The students’ response toward the learning
activity during the implementation of role play technique proved that they were
interested to the role play activity. It shown by the students more active in the
speaking activity. The students’ speaking achievement through role play was
improved. It shown by the students were confident to speak English through role
playing because they had the idea what to said. They had enriched the vocabulary
and had known how to arrange it into good grammar. It shown by the significant
increased of the students’ score which proven the improvement from the first
cycle to the second cycle.
