Abstract

Improving Students’ Speaking Skill By Using Three Step
Interview Technique ( A Classroom Action Research at VIIIA class of SMP Putra
Khatulistiwa The research was conducted in order to improve students’ speaking skill at
VIIIA class of SMP Putra Khatulistiwa Pontianak. The method used in this research
is a Classroom Action Research which consisted of Planning, Acting, Observing and
Reflecting. This research was conducted in two cycles. The subject of the study was
28 students. The techniques used for collecting data were measurement and
observation. The tools of collecting data were observation checklist, field notes,
speaking test, and video recorder. To analyze the data, the researcher used qualitative
and quantitative data analysis.
In the first cycle, qualitative data showed that students did not participate well
in the learning process. But, in the second cycle the students showed that they could
participate well, and also they could speak well and active in learning process. Based
on quantitative data also showed that the students’ mean score had improvement. In
the first cycle students’ mean score was 46.42. But, In the second cycle, the students’
mean score was 69,57.
