Abstract
An Analysis on Students’ Mastery in Writing
Passive Voice at the Second Year Students of SMA
Negeri 6 Pontianak. The main objective of this study was to determine the students’
recognition mastery of passive voice of the second year students of SMA Negeri 6
Pontianak. This research was designed in descriptive study and the researcher used
cluster sampling to choose the sample.
The whole population of this study was 118 second year students of SMA
Negeri 6 Pontianak who are grouped into four classes. In order to get the sample
of these four classes, cluster random sampling was used in this research. 33
students was chosen as the sample of this research. The instrument of the test was
constructed in 20 items sentence-typed test.
The research applied three different tools to collect the data. There were
questionnaire, unstructured interviewed with the English teacher to get more data
and supporting information from questionnaire result and a test in order to find out
the students’ mastery in passive voice. The 33 students who were the sample in this
research were asked to answer all the 10 items in the questionnaire which divided
by the researcher into thee indicators: the change of auxiliary, the change of verbs,
and the understanding in tense. The collected data analyzed by steps which
proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994) and the test which proposed by Harris
(2005)
In the research finding, it was divided into two parts:first is the students’
mastery in passive voice the researcher found out that the total of individual score
of the students’ test was 5,1% which categorized as very poor clasification. The
second is the students’ difficulty in passive voice, which researcher found out that
students’ mastery in understanding the English tense was the dominant problem
that faced by the students at SMA Negeri 6 Pontianak.
