Abstract
This research aimed to find out factors influenced students' problems in speaking English. The subjects of this research were eighth grade B students at SMP Negeri 19 Pontianak City. To collect data, researcher used a close-ended questionnaire and interview. The data from the closed questionnaire are linguistic and non linguistic problem. Linguistic includes three aspects such as lack of vocabulary, lack of grammar, and poor pronunciation, while non-linguistic includes five aspects such as, mother
tongue use, low of motivation, shyness and lack confident, anxiety, lack of practice and oppurtunity, and fear of making mistakes. The results of the data analysis carried out show that non linguistic was the highest score faced by students. The mother tongue use, fear of making mistakes, low motivation, and lack of vocabulary were the problems that hinder students in improving their English speaking skills. From the research results, it can be suggested that teachers can improve unique learning to help students‟ solving speaking skills problems.
