Abstract

Reading is an activity to see what is written and the process of understanding the contents of the text aloud or silently. Therefore, if students can read and understand the reading text, the teaching and learning process will run
effectively and efficiently. However, most of them, face difficulties in reading due to a lack of vocabulary and lack of confidence in reading texts. The researcher decided to take further action to overcome these problems by conducting more in�depth research in this final project. The researcher applied teaching techniques using the Snowball Throwing Technique to solve these problems. This research
aimed to find out how the Snowball Throwing Technique can improve the reading comprehension of class tenth students at SMA PGRI 3 Tayan Hulu in the academic year 2022/2023.
This research was conducted through classroom action research (CAR). The subject of this research was the students of Tenth Grade SMA PGRI 3 Tayan Hulu, consisted of 20 students. This research used observation and measurement
technique of data collection. The tools of data collection were observation checklist and field note for the observation technique and vocabulary test for the
measurement technique. Then, the data analysis in this research used qualitative analysis to analyze qualitative data and quantitative analysis to analyze quantitative data. The researcher used two types of scoring, which are individual scores and mean scores used to measure the students’ reading comprehension by using Snowball Throwing Technique.
The result of this research showed that the students’ reading comprehension improved from 51,2 to 68,8. Students showed enthusiasm during the learning process and enjoyed participating in the learning process of reading with the
Snowball Throwing Technique. The use of the Snowball Throwing Technique could improve student scores on the reading test which could be seen from cycle 1 the student scores were low with a mean score of 51.2 then student scores improve in cycle 2 with a mean score of 68.8. So, the researcher suggested to the other teacher who wants to teach the students reading comprehension using Snowball Throwing Technique. The Snowball Throwing Technique is an appropriate
technique used to improve students' reading comprehension and through this technique, students can not only improve their reading comprehension, but students can also enjoy the learning process.
