Abstract

The study entitled "The Effectiveness of Using Spelling Bee in Teaching Students' Reading Ability." The purpose of this research was to determine whether a Spelling Bee was effective for teaching reading ability and to determine the effect size before and after the treatment process. The researcher implemented the Pre-Experimental design with a quantitative approach. The sample consisted of 30 students VII F of SMP Negeri 2 Ketapang. The researcher collected by using the cluster random sampling technique. The technique of data collection applied in this research was the measurement technique, and the data from the pre�test and post-test were analyzed statistically using SPSS 22 for Windows. The findings showed that in there were differences before and after treatment in the Spelling Bee teaching
reading ability. Using the Spelling Bee was a strong effect based on Cohen's effect. That is, this method has a positive effect on students' reading ability because by going through the teaching process using spelling bees, students have good basic knowledge of reading English, such as knowledge of spelling in English so that they can improve students' reading ability well.
