Abstract

The purpose of this research were to find out the factors that cause students’ demotivation in learning English and also to explore the major factor that demotivated students in learning English. Thus, in order to explore students’ demotivating factors in learning English. This research used mixed-method of collecting data, the data were analyzed with descriptive research. This research was conducted at IKIP PGRI Pontianak where the participants consisted of twenty-eight students from B. Morning class at Fourth-Semester of the English Education Study Program of IKIP PGRI Pontianak in the Academic Year of 2021/2022. The tool that used to achieve the objectives of this research are questionnaire and semi-structured interview as the data collection, through ten closed�ended items of demotivation factors and the experience from five students reflected on their learning process as their demotivating factors in learning English. Based on the findings results of questionnaire, the majority of students answer “yes” for six question as
a significant demotivation factor and then four question as a not significant demotivation factor from all the ten questionnaires. That they are answer as demotivation factors in learning English, Reduced self-confidence found out to be the major factor that decrease students’ interest in learning English. This research is expected to enrich the literature research of demotivation in learning English and provide an adequate information to educators, and also to help the students eliminate the demotivating factors.
