Abstract

The participant of the research was the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 01, Seberuang, Kapuas Hulu, in the Academic Year of 2020/2021 consists of 35 students. The technique usedf or collecting data was writing test. In the research the writer also applied field notes and observation check
list table. The field notes were used to take notes about teaching learning activities and the observation check list table was applied to observe the students’ behavior in teaching learning process.
The thesis is entitled Improving Students’ Ability in Writing Descriptive Paragraph by Using Pictorial Media. (A Classroom Action Research to the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 01, Seberuang, Kapuas Hulu, in the Academic Year of 2020/2021). It is expected that the research would be useful for the teachers and students in language teaching and
learning process because the researcher applied pictorial media in teaching descriptive writing.
The form of this research is classroom action research, with two cycles in which the writer as the teacher in the classroom. Action research is a process in which participant examines their educational practice systematically and carefully, using the techniques of research. The writer
applied collaborative action research for two cycles In the first cycle some of the students still got some difficulties in writing descriptive paragraph. It was shown from the mean score of the 1st cycle, 50.2. Meanwhile in the second cycle the mean score was 77.3. Finally it can be concluded that pictorial media could improve the students’ achievement on writing descriptive paragraph. It was shown from the significant improvement on the students’ score in each cycle. Action hypothesis showed that pictorial media can improve the students’ descriptive writing achievement.
