Abstract

In this study aimed to find out the types of grammatical errors that students do in writing recount text, the dominant errors that students do in writing recount text, and the causes of students grammatical errors in writing recount text at second grade students of SMP N 1 LUMAR.
In this research the researcher used direct communication and documentation as a technique of data collection. Interview guideline and students worksheet as a tool of data collection. There were 67 students at second grade students as a population, the researcher took the sample consisted of 23 students in the second grade of SMP N 1 LUMAR. The researcher used descriptive qualitative design to describe grammatical errors in writing recount text. In this research the researcher used students worksheet in writing recount text to find out grammatical errors of the research, from the result of student writing the researcher analyzed, classify the error and percentage of data in each errors
writing recount.
Based on the results of the study it was found that the total of students error were 326 items. There were 108 items (33.13%) errors of addition, 88 items (26.99%) errors of commission, 83 items (25.46%) errors of misformation, and 47
items (14.42) errors of misordering. The dominant error in this study was the addition there wes 108 items (33.13%) error. And the causes of errors in this study there were carelessness, first language interference, and translation.
