Abstract

This research aims at analyzing how the implementation of character education in teaching English at SMPN 2 Pontianak and to discover what are the advantages of implementing character education in teaching English.
The researcher used descriptive qualitative research to analyze how the implementation of character education. An English teacher as a subject and students’ character education as the object. The population was all the English
teachers at SMPN 2 Pontianak which consists of four teachers. Beside that, the sample was an English teacher who is teaching eight-grade students. The researcher used three main techniques namely documentation, observation, and interview. Documentation and observation for analyze how the implementation in the field, while interview to discover what the advantages of implementing character education in teaching English Based on the data analysis, the result of documentation showed that 12 character values namely religious, tolerance, discipline, perseverance/hard work,
creativity, independence, democracy, curiosity, friendly/communicative, environmental care, social awareness, and responsibility are in the highest position or the frequency of its occurrence is the most frequent (very high).
Despite all that, interest of reading value just appear three times (high) and honesty value just appears two times (medium). The results of observation are slightly different from the lesson plans because there are character values that are not included in the lesson plans, but those values are applied to the teaching process in the classroom such as achievement appreciation and peace love. In addition, the frequency of occurency of friendly/communicative values is more commonly found in the teaching process. The last, the results of interview showed that the advantages of implementation are improving the character of students and
providing understanding of what obligations and prohibitions exist for students and others.
Based on the data analysis above it is known that an English teacher has implemented 14 character educations in each lesson plan. However, in practice, teacher has actually implemented 16 character values. So, it can be concluded that between both of them it is known that there is a difference of 0,875% (almost fit).
The advantages of implementation are improving the character of students to be better and providing understanding of what their obligations and prohibitions.
