ABSTRACT
Dini Dhasmara (321510098). The Difficulties of Teaching Reading Comprehension in Rural School ( A Descriptive Study to the Teacher of Eighth Grade of Junior High School in Sungai Betung Sub-district in Academic Year Of 2019/2020). Main supervisor: Tri Kurniawati, M.Pd; Assistant Supervisor: Dian Shinta Sari, M.Pd. Thesis: Language education and art Faculty, IKIP PGRI Pontianak.
This research conducted in a descriptive mix method. This research was aimed to describe how teaching reading comprehension in a rural school and to find out what are the difficulties of teaching reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of Junior High School in Sungai Betung Sub-District in the academic year of 2019/2020.
The researcher used two classes of different schools as the subject of the research. The first school was SMP Negeri 2 Sungai Betung consisted of 1 English teacher and the second school was SMP Negeri 3 Sungai Betung was also consists of 1 English teacher. To collect the data, the researcher used an observation sheet, interview, and questionnaire. For analyzing the data the researcher used observation sheet and interview as qualitative data. Then, the questionnaire itself as quantitative data.
This research was done by using some tools to collecting the data. Here, the researcher was use observation sheet to find ound how is the teaching reading comprehension in rural school. The researcher also used interview and questionnaire to figure out the difficulties in teaching reading comprehension.
The observation sheet result showed that the teachers only used a game in teaching reading comprehension because they were lack of media and they only have an English textbook. Moreover, the result of the interview with the teacher and students'questionnaire both are limitations of the English dictionary, lack of media and learning strategies due to lack of infrastructure, parents' guidance, reading difficulties activity, teacher role in the class and English textbook.
Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that teaching reading comprehension in the schools was the teacher used cooperative learning strategy without also the game as the media and teaching reading comprehension difficulties caused by some factors such as strategy, media, dictionaries, and location of the school. The researcher found that students' internal factors like parents' guidance to build up students' interest in reading can cause the teacher difficulties in teaching reading comprehension.
