Abstract

The purpose of the research is to determine the difficulties faced by students in reading comprehension in eleventh grade. This research uses a quantitative approach and measurement with a descriptive design using study students documents and close-ended questionnaires as the data collection tools. The subjects in this research were 30 eleventh-grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Nanga Pinoh in the academic year 2022/2023. The results of the research show
that students experienced difficulties in the reading comprehension process, especially when students worked on questions related to reading comprehension. This was found in the document of work carried out by students obtained by the researcher from the eleventh-grade English teacher. The difficulties experienced by students are indicators of difficulties in answering questions about determining
the main idea (29%), indicators of difficulties with detail information (54%), indicators of difficulties in making inferences (55%), and indicators of difficulties understanding vocabulary (47.33%). In this study, the researcher also found students' difficulties in reading comprehension from a close-ended questionnaire that the researcher distributed and filled out by eleventh-grade students. The questionnaire that the researcher distributed contained 20 statements consisting of positive statements and negative statements. The questionnaire distributed
contained four indicators of reading comprehension difficulties, namely determining the main idea, detailed information, making inferences, and understanding vocabulary. Based on the results of the closed questionnaire that the researcher obtained, the researcher found the percentage of difficulties experienced by eleventh-grade students.
