Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe how audio-visual media is used in teaching English and to find out the challenges and benefits perceived by teachers in using audio-visual media for students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pontianak. The researcher employed an English teacher and conducted the analysis by involving the 7th grade students in the school year 2022/2023 when classroom learning took place. The results of the interviews and observations, in which the researcher acted as an observer and took field notes in the classroom, were processed as data that could explain the use of audio-visual media and the challenges and advantages perceived by teachers in teaching English to students.
The findings of this research indicated that there are three essential stages that teacher should follow when using audio-visual media in their English language teaching, namely preparation, use, and follow-up. The challenges perceived by the teacher included the limited availability of facilities and technology in school and the absence of subtitles or translations for some videos. Additionally, there were benefits perceived by teachers, such as increased student interest in learning and greater student engagement in the classroom. This research is expected to be used as information to help teachers explore methods of teaching English by using videos as audio-visual media for teaching English.
