Abstract
The aim of this research was to determine the kind of reading strategies and dominant aspects used by EFL students in second grade descriptive texts at SMP Assalam Pontianak. Researcher used quantitativemethods. The subjects of this
research were students at SMP Assalam Pontianak. The data collection technique in this research used purposive sampling, direct measurement and communication techniques. The instruments used were reading tests and interviews. Researchers gave the test 2 times, with 10 multiple choice questions for each test. After getting data from the reading test, researcher analyzed the data by calculating students' reading test scores. Then the researcher categorized students' ability levels based on the students' average scores in two reading tests. To determine students' reading abilities, researcher calculated the percentage of students' reading aspects in five aspects of reading comprehension. Interview data was analyzed by calculating the percentage of students' answers.
The results of the research show that second grade students at SMP Assalam Pontianak have dominant aspects of reading in five categories of reading aspects. Namely, determining the main idea, detail information, understanding vocabulary,
making inferences, and locating references. The dominant aspects of reading used by students are understanding vocabulary 24.32%, looking for references 24.09%, determining main idea 19.55%, detail information 18.18%, making inferences 13.86%. It can be seen from the dominant aspects of reading used by students that of the five aspects of reading, understanding vocabulary and locating references
are the most dominant ones used by students.
