Abstract
The focused problem in this research is to describe the factors caused students’ confidence in speaking English as a foreign language. The data collection process involved 44 students who speaks English as a foreign language and are currently enrolling in the English Education study program of IKIP PGRI Pontianak for more than one year. The data analysis demonstrate five factors and they are Self-Perceived Ability, Comparison with Others, Stress and Enjoyment, Classroom Participation, and Communication and Interaction. This research used a survey descriptive research design with a quantitative approach. To obtain the data, the researcher used indirect communication technique by distributing a closed ended questionnaire adopted from Asakereh & Dehghannezhad (2015).
The findings on factors affecting students' confidence in speaking English as a foreign language reveal several key elements. Students' self-perceived ability emerged as the most significant factor (M=3,54), suggesting that those who view themselves as competent in English speaking are more likely to engage in activities to improve their proficiency. The stress and enjoyment level also plays a crucial role (M=3,48), indicating that a lower stress level and higher enjoyment contribute to enhanced language learning outcomes and increased confidence. Additionally, external support and resources were identified as influential factors, emphasizing the importance of a supportive educational environment in fostering students' confidence. However, factors such as communication and interaction, as well as comparisons with others, received lower mean scores, indicating a relatively lower impact on students' confidence in English speaking. Overall, the overall mean score of 3.40 suggests a moderately positive perception of the identified factors among the surveyed students. In addition, the findings suggest the need for targeted interventions to enhance specific aspects of confidence, particularly in communication and interaction. The diversity in confidence levels emphasizes the importance of personalized approaches to support each student's language learning journey.
