Abstract
This research was conducted to finding out how the listen-read-discuss strategy can improve students' reading comprehension by using the LRD strategy and students’ prior knowledge to the eighth-grade students at SMPN 03 Mempawah Hilir in the academic year of 2022/2023. This research used qualitative and quantitative. The total population is 22 students at SMPN 03 Mempawah Hilir. For data collection, researcher used field notes and reading tests to find out whether there was progress from students in improving students' reading comprehension in descriptive texts.
The result of the research showed that the application of the LRD strategy was effective in teaching reading comprehension to the eighth-grade students’ at SMPN 03 Mempawah Hilir. This research was conducted in two cycles. From the results of using the test. In cycle 1, students’ reading score only sum up to 63,8 with lowest score 50 and highest score 80. Then, the researcher continued to cycle 2 using classroom action research steps and the researcher focused more on attracting students' attention to focus on
learning and asking students to remember difficult words in descriptive texts. After the treatment, the score of students’ reading comprehension improved. Therefore, the score collected in cycle 2 sum up to 83,6 with lowest score 70 and highest score 95. This score indicating that the application of LRD strategy increased in students' scores in improving their reading comprehension of descriptive texts in the classroom learning process. From the findings, it can be concluded that LRD strategy is recommended in teaching reading. Thus, LRD strategy is suggested to use by the teacher to increase students’ reading comprehension because
LRD gives significant impact in teaching reading.
