Abstract
This research aimed to find out how small group discussion technique can improve students' speaking skill at Tenth Grade Students of SMKN 1 Rasau Jaya in Academic Year of 2022/2023. This research was the Classroom Action Research (CAR). The techniques of data collection used in this study were observation for qualitative data and measurement for quantitative data. The tools of data collection used in this study were observation checklist and field note to observed students’ behavior during implementation of small group discussion and speaking test to test students’ speaking skill. The subject of this research was 31 students of X TKJ SMKN 1 Rasau Jaya. This research was conducted in two
cycles. Based on the research findings, the results of observation checklists and field note showed the improvement of students’ behavior from cycle 1 and cycle 2. Students’ performance got better because of the class were exciting. During the implementation of small group discussion, students was active in interaction and confident to speak in front of the class to presented the dialogues. Besides, the
students speaking skill also improved. Mean score of cycle 1 was 61.9 and improved to 78.4 in cycle 2 with the good level category. Therefore, the conclusion of this study is the small group discussion technique can effectively improve students speaking skill at tenth grade students of SMKN 1 Rasau Jaya.
