Abstract

The researcher aimed to find out types of errors are made by students in pronouncing the words containing silent letters k/, /t/, /b/, and /w/ and the causes of pronunciation error. This research uses descriptive qualitative. Pupulation of
this research were all 11th grade students of SMAN 3 Sengah Temila. The tools used in this research were tests and questionnaires, the tests given to students was given to 15 participants, then questionnaires were given to 16 respondents. Based on the results of the tests that have been collected, the researcher found that the most types of error made by students on pronouncing silent letter was pre�systematic error at 66%. Based on the result of the interview, the student answers showed that the causes of the error made by students in pronouncing silent letter was the influence of the mother tongue used daily, the spelling of vocabulary was different from the pronunciation then the last the students rarely spoke in English and students never studied material about English silent letters.
