Abstract

The purpose of this study was to improve students' reading skills by using the jolly phonics method in class 1A of SD Negeri 35 South Pontianak in the 2022/2023 academic year. This research was conducted using Classroom Action Research. It was conducted with classroom students. The subjects of this study were class 1 A students totaling 30 people. instruments to collect data are field notes, observation sheets, and reading tests. To analyze the data, researcher used qualitative and quantitative data. In qualitative data, researcher analyzed data using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. In quantitative data, researcher analyzed the test results data calculated by the average score in each cycle.
Based on the results of qualitative data, the findings of this study showed that during the teaching and learning process with the jolly phonics method, students' behavior and activities in the classroom increased. The results of the observation checklist and field notes showed that students' performance improved from cycle I to cycle II meetings. Furthermore, the results of the quantitative data showed that the average score of students' reading ability in the first cycle meeting was 57 and in the second cycle was 80.67. The results of this study show that the improvement of students' reading ability was successful. The results of this study showed an increase in students' reading ability successfully.
The researcher concluded that the jolly phonics method improved students' reading ability in the pronunciation of the alphabet in grade 1 students of SD Negeri 35 Pontianak Selatan.
