Abstract

Recent studies have shown how technology (i.e., Canva) can be equipped in language teaching and result in various beneficial impacts for both teachers and learners. This research focused on how students’ writing skills can be improved by using canva at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sungai Kakap in the academic year of 2022/2023. Based on preliminary observations, that in their school, especially English lessons, they have never used Canva as an English learning media and said that they use books as teaching materials and look for teaching materials on the internet and power point slides. Based on interviews, it
was reported that students are prone to boredom and may participate less actively in the English lesson. It was then the idea of implementing and designing stimulating learning media occurred from the English teacher to the researcher.
Thus, the use of Canva is considered as a platform to design and create the learning media, such as slide presentation and worksheets.
This present research was conducted in collaboration with English teacher acting as the facilitator and observer. To collect data, this research conducted observations by using field notes and observation sheets, and administered a
writing test with explanation text for each cycle. The research was conducted in two cycles with two meetings in each cycle. Moreover, the analysis and feedback on writing test focus on content, vocabulary, grammar and mechanics aspects of students’ writing. After the data was collected, the researcher proceeded the analysis procedure by qualitative and quantitative approaches.
The findings from the observation and writing test data indicate that the use of Canva as a tool in a high school English classroom has a positive impact on students' writing skills, particularly in various aspects such as identifying text structures, selecting and organizing relevant information, organizing paragraphs and sentences, vocabulary development, word choice, and writing style. These findings align with previous research that highlights the benefits of incorporating visual aids and technology in language learning. This research findings also suggest educators and curriculum developers should consider incorporating visual
aids and technology tools in lesson planning and curriculum design to enhance students' writing skills. Providing training and professional development opportunities for teachers to effectively integrate these tools into their teaching practices can further optimize their use and benefits.
