Abstract
This research aimed to find out the strategies used by EFL teachers in teaching speaking skill and to find out problems are faced by the EFL teachers in applying strategies during teaching speaking skill at senior high school in Pemangkat sub-district in the academic year of 2021/2022. The subject of this research is EFL teachers at senior high schools in
Pemangkat sub-district.
This research is descriptive qualitative research. This research used questionnaire, interview, and documentation as the technique of data collection. The tools of data collection were questionnaires open-ended, unstructure interview, and the documents. Then, the data analysis in this research was qualitative analysis.
In this research, the researcher began to give questions sheet to each of EFL teachers related the strategies used in teaching speaking skill and the problem faced in applying the strategies. And then, the researcher began to do interview to get in-depth information of the strategies used in teaching speaking skill and the problem faced in implementing the strategies. The result of questionnaire and transcript interview as the document. The data obtained showed that EFL teachers at senior high schools in the Pemangkat sub-district have different strategies, both prepare the materials before teaching-learning in the classroom and method used in teaching speaking skill. The researcher found five method used by EFL teachers at senior high schools in the Pemangkat sub-district, they are role-play, discussion, demonstration, direct method, and discovery learning method. The EFL teachers’ technique in applying methods is different. The problem faced by EFL teachers in applying the strategies used in teaching speaking are the students do not initiative to speak English
because several factors, they are cognitive, such as self-confident, lack motivation, thinking that English is not important and thinking that they do not go abroud and affective factors, such as lack of vocabulary and grammar. Besides that, this condition during the pandemic make EFL
teachers unable to communicate well with the students through online, so it is less effective to use the strategies. However, the EFL teachers can solve the problem faced by giving motivation and advide to the students to be
more active in the classroom.
