Abstract
This study aimed to know the level and the most dominant factors that causing students‟ difficulties in speaking English at tenth grade of SMA Pelangi Punggur. This research used descriptive research. The technique used in this
research was direct communication technique. The tools used were questionnaire and interview guidance. The result of this research showed that the level of student difficulty was at a moderate level with a percentage of 68%. While the
factors that basically cause students' difficulties in speaking English were dominated by external factors by acquiring 60% of all respondents, which causes were by lack of confidence, anxiety, shyness and lack of motivation. Furthermore, the results of the interviews found that: in this first aspect, which was related to students' speaking interests, that students really like to speak English. In the aspect of difficulties, respondents stated that the origin of the difficulties they get when using English in order to speak was none other than the lack of mastery of
vocabulary. The third aspect can be concluded that the teacher who teaches English to students was correct and appropriate and the teacher in this case also responds well like a teacher by justifying mistakes made by students. Finally, in the fourth aspect, students increase their ability to speak English by utilizing various existing social media such as YouTube and Google.
