This study aimed to determine the perception of students of the English language education study program at IKIP PGRI PONTIANAK regarding the use of google translate in writing skills. This research is qualitative. The subjects of this study were 4th-semester students of the English Education Study Program, IKIP PGRI Pontianak. The instrument used by researchers to collect data was interviews with 15 students. The results of this study indicate that the use of google translate has the students perception have a good perception of the use of google translate in writing skills. From the results of the interviews, the students felt very helpful
with google translate, because google translate really helped them in translating a sentence/word that they didn't know the meaning of. Besides that, Google Translate can also add new vocabulary knowledge that they rarely encounter or
use. Google translate provides convenience in pronunciation, to help students who have difficulty pronouncing words or sentences in English. Also, advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are: (1) google translate is easy to use. (2) can help students in practicing better pronunciation and add new vocabulary. (3) google translate can be used anywhere and anytime. (4) google translate provides many language options. (5) google translate is supported by voice, audio, and picture. (6) can translate via the link. (7) google translate is a free application. The disadvantages are: (1) causing students to be lazy and dependent. (2) the results of the google translate translation are sometimes inaccurate. (3) cannot be used when not connected to the internet. (4) has a character limitation in translating. The
conclusion is a student’s perception of the use google translate have many benefits in it is used, because it can be seen from the result of interviews conducted by researcher that there are many advantages provided by translation machines such as google translate to help them.
