Abstract
This study aims to find out how to improve reading comprehension taught using choral reading strategies to seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Sungai Kakap in the academic year 2021/2022. This research used classroom action
research which consists of two cycles. The sample of this study amounted to 25 students. In collecting data in this study, researcher collected data using 2 kinds of techniques, namely collecting quantitative data by means of reading tests, while collecting data using qualitative methods, namely observation techniques and field notes. This test is used to collect data about students' reading comprehension. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the mean score formula.
The students' reading test results on the reading test, cycle I, and cycle II had significantly different scores. There was an increase in the acquisition of better students at the end of the action in cycle II. In reading test 1 the average score of students is 52, cycle 2 is 76,2. Based on the results of the analysis, it was concluded that the increase in students' literal understanding in terms of finding main ideas and identifying supporting ideas using the coral reading method in seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Sungai Kakap was improved.
The researcher found that most of the students were interested and motivated to learn to read. The data also shows that students feel that using the choral reading method can help them in understanding the text. This method
makes students more enthusiastic because it makes them feel more confident to continue reading the text. This also shows that learning by using the chorus reading method can be applied as one of the techniques to improve students'
English reading skills.
