Abstract

This research aimed to find out how the affirmation comics as an innovation can help build students' motivation of the eleventh grades students of SMA Panca Bhakti Pontianak in the academic year of 2021/2022. In this research, the researcher used affirmation comics to build student motivation. Based on the pre-observation, the researcher found students' problems in learning motivation. The problems faced by students showed signs of lack of learning motivation in their English subjects, such as being less proactive in doing their English assignments (both homework and in-session practice). The research confirmed the
problem after interviewing the English teacher and students and then looks at the degree of student learning motivation.
The processes in Classroom Action Research (CAR) used in this research involved four stages per cycle; planning stage, action stage, observation stage, and reflection stages. To obtained the data, researcher used indirect communication technique and observation, there were questionnaire and observation sheet as a tools of data collection. The subject of this research were This study involved an English teacher and eleventh-grade students of SMA PANCA BHAKTI Pontianak. To analyzed the data, researcher made a bar chart in the form of the results of questionnaire, and made a transcript in the form of text from the results of observation.
The results of the research showed that the Affirmation Comics as An Innovation to Build Students' Learning Motivation at SMA Panca Bhakti Pontianak was succesfully regarded. The findings showed positive changes on students’
learning motivation after the implementation of affirmation comics in both cycles.
Affirmation comics are able to establish positive student performance and classroom environment, as well as to improve student motivation in learning (active learning strategies and English learning value) excluding the self-efficacy.
The limitation of this research is that further data collection may be required to explore this issue on difficulties may happen due to chosen learning activity that
is less engaging the whole class, lack of language knowledge on students, and other psychological factors (i.e., boredom or fear of making mistakes).
