Abstract

This research aimed to describe Students’ Perceptions of English Debate at IKIP PGRI Pontianak. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. Teachniques of collecting data were the questionnaire and interview. An close-ended questionnaire was distributed to 81 students from sixth
semester (third-year semester) in IKIP PGRI Pontianak and that selected using a purposive sampling techniques. Perception in this study used the concept of perception theory proposed by University Course. This concept includes 7 indicators, namely Course Presentation, Instructor, Student (Himself or Herself), Course Topic, Other Students, Course Execution, Physical Environment or Classroom Environment. The data taken in this study uses this perception concept to achieve the research objectives. This research used a descriptive qualitative and quantitative. To obtain the data, the researcher used indirect communication
techniques and direct commmunication techniques. To analyze the data, researcher use a decriptive statistics from the results of questionnaire and thematic analysis from the results of interview. In general, it was found that the students do like the course and think English Debate subject is a good course to take. However, they reported that the learning experience was not as pleasant as expected, although they still strongly agree that joining the course can help them improve the language aspects (i.e., vocabulary and pronunciation). Subsequently, from 7 aspects that construct English debate subject, the students’ perceptions towards how the whole course was carried out (course execution) and how their peers/classmates conduct themselves in the lesson were rather low. A study conducted by Syukri &
Mardiana (2016) suggested that overall capability of students' conducting a debate should be concerned and utilizing a program, such as English debate, can be influential to promote debate interest on students.
