Abstract
This research was focused on investigating the level of students’ reluctance in learning English and the contribution of motivation in English class. The subjects in this study were students of class XI SMAN 1 Tebas. The method used was a mixed method. Data collection techniques are carried out directly and indirect communication techniques are in the form of interviews and questionnaires. Data collection tools are closed questionnaires, unstructured interviews, and documents. Then, the form in this study was a qualitative and quantitative analysis.
The results of the study were, firstly, the level of student reluctance in learning English was categorized as low, this can be seen from the results of the study where students felt good, have high attention in learning and have high
desire and awareness in learning. Second, from interviews conducted with students, the result was that motivation has an important role for students especially in the learning process, motivation has an influence on students' enthusiasm in learning, especially in English class at that time the school was shown that students felt motivation from intrinsic and extrinsic. This aspect was very important, but there were still some students who need extra attention for
their learning motivation.
